How it's calculated
- Fee on one order = order value × the plan's rate, rounded to the cent, + the plan's fixed fee
- Fees a month = fee on one order × orders a month
- Saved against Basic = Basic's fees a month − the plan's fees a month
- Through another payment provider, Shopify charges its own percentage of the order on top of that provider's fee
Every figure on this page comes from Offer Suite's own margin engine, the same code the product uses to forecast each offer's and option's profit and to compute realized margin on orders. Money is computed in whole cents.
Worked example
A store on Basic takes a $60.00 order on a standard card. Shopify Payments charges 2.9% + $0.30: $2.04, 3.4% of the order once the fixed fee is counted. The same order costs $1.92 on Grow, $1.80 on Advanced, $1.65 on Plus.
At 1,000 orders a month the store charges $60,000.00 to cards and pays $2,040.00 in fees on Basic. On Plus it would pay $1,650.00: $390.00 less a month, to set against what Plus costs more than Basic.
Assumptions
- Rates are the ones Shopify's pricing page printed for the United States when it was read on 12 October 2026. The Shopify Payments fees pages list every country's rates.
- Every order in the month is the same value and paid with the same kind of card. A real month mixes cards; premium and international cards cost more than the standard rate.
- A plan's subscription price is not in the figures. Compare what a plan saves in fees with what it costs more a month on Shopify's pricing page.
- A refund does not return the fee on the original charge, and a chargeback has a fee of its own. Neither is counted here.
Questions
How much does Shopify Payments charge per transaction?
In the United States, 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced, 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus for a standard card online, as Shopify's pricing page printed it on 12 October 2026. Premium cards and cards taken in person have their own rates.
When is a higher Shopify plan worth it for the card rate alone?
When the fees it saves in a month are more than the plan costs over the one below it. The saving grows with card volume, so the calculator states it per month at your order value and order count.
Is the fee charged on shipping and tax?
Yes. The rate applies to the whole amount the card is charged, so enter the order value with shipping, and with tax if you collect it.
What if I use another payment provider?
Shopify then charges a fee of its own on each order, a percentage that falls with the plan, and the provider charges its fee as well. The last table shows Shopify's part.
