Expected profit per subscriber over 12 orders on each plan, at three retention rates

| Subscribers who take the next order | Deep first-order discount | Flat discount | The deep plan catches up at | Sign-ups the deep plan needs |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 50.0% take the next order | −$7.95 | −$5.08 | not within 12 orders | none is enough |
| 70.0% take the next order | −$7.55 | −$8.35 | order 7 | none is enough |
| 85.0% take the next order | −$6.80 | −$14.52 | order 4 | none is enough |

Every figure is computed by the margin engine in Offer Suite's own code, in whole cents, from the costs below.

## What the numbers say

Two subscriptions, both shipped free. The deep plan takes 40% off the first order ($18.64) and 10% off each renewal ($27.95). The flat plan takes 20% off every order ($24.85). The deep plan's first order loses $8.26 and each renewal keeps $0.31; the flat plan's first order loses $2.54 and each renewal loses $2.54.

So the deep plan starts $5.72 behind and earns $2.85 more on every renewal a subscriber takes. If 70.0% take each next order, its subscriber loses $7.55 over twelve orders, where the flat plan's loses $8.35, and has caught up by order 7.

The deeper discount is there to win sign-ups. At that retention its subscriber earns nothing, so more sign-ups add no profit. Retention decides between the two: the table shows three rates.

## Questions

### Is a deep first-order subscription discount profitable for pet brands?

On these costs the first order at 40% off loses $8.26 and each renewal at 10% off keeps $0.31. Over twelve orders a subscriber loses $7.95 at 50.0% retention, loses $7.55 at 70.0% retention, loses $6.80 at 85.0% retention.

### Should pet brands discount a subscription's first order or every order?

Per subscriber, on these costs: at 50.0% retention the flat discount loses less ($5.08 against $7.95); at 70.0% retention the deep first-order discount loses less ($7.55 against $8.35); at 85.0% retention the deep first-order discount loses less ($6.80 against $14.52). The deep discount also has to be judged on the sign-ups it adds.
